Tension ran high in Makutano, Meru County, on Monday as North Imenti Member of Parliament Rahim Dawood was dramatically chased away by angry protesters who were in no mood to hear from their elected representative during the ongoing matatu strike.
Dawood had attempted to address the crowd as demonstrations continued to grip the area, but the protesters were having none of it. He was heckled and driven off before he could even find his footing, a moment that painted a vivid picture of just how deep the frustration runs among ordinary Kenyans who feel let down by their leaders.
The situation in Makutano remained tense as the demonstrations pressed on, with residents and matatu operators standing firm in their rejection of the recent fuel price hikes that have sent transport costs soaring and pushed household budgets to the breaking point.
The scenes in Meru are a reflection of a wider mood across the country, where patience has worn thin and the sight of a politician showing up is no longer seen as reassurance but as provocation.
