If you are working in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland, understanding what actually lands in your bank account each month can be confusing. Between Income Tax and National Insurance contributions deducted via the PAYE (Pay As You Earn) system, your gross salary is rarely what you take home.

How UK Income Tax and PAYE Work
In the UK, most employees don’t have to file a self-assessment tax return because income tax is deducted automatically from wages by employers through PAYE.
Your tax calculation rests on two main pillars:
- Personal Allowance: The amount of income you can earn each year tax-free. For most individuals, this is £12,570.
- Tax Bands: Once your earnings exceed your Personal Allowance, different tiers of your income are taxed at progressively higher rates (Basic, Higher, and Additional rates).
2026 UK Income Tax Bands & Rates
The table below outlines the tax thresholds for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland:
| Tax Band | Tax Rate | Taxable Income Threshold |
| Personal Allowance | 0% | Up to £12,570 |
| Basic Rate | 20% | £12,571 to £50,270 |
| Higher Rate | 40% | £50,271 to £125,140 |
| Additional Rate | 45% | Over £125,141 |
Note: If your adjusted net income exceeds £100,000, your Personal Allowance decreases by £1 for every £2 you earn above that threshold, resulting in an effective 60% tax trap on income between £100,000 and £125,140.
What is National Insurance (NI)?
Aside from Income Tax, employees pay Class 1 National Insurance contributions. This is a mandatory tax used to fund state benefits, including the state pension and the National Insurance healthcare components. Contributions apply to earnings above the primary threshold (£12,570) and drop to a lower percentage once earnings exceed the upper earnings limit (£50,270).
