Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Mumbi Waiguru has issued a comprehensive statement after Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale compared members of the Kikuyu community to hyenas and said they should be hunted.
Duale, who spoke in his native Somali dialect, stated that members of the Kikuyu community are hyenas and they should be hunted because they are the ones stopping President William Ruto from being re-elected in 2027.

In African traditions, a hyena is described as uncouth, dirty, greedy, and an animal that should not be anywhere near humans. The comments have sparked outrage across the political divide, with many Kenyans condemning the remarks as reckless and divisive.
Waiguru, in a statement on Friday, described Duale’s remarks as ethnic profiling coming from somebody who brought zero votes to President William Ruto’s election in the 2022 presidential election. She noted that the Kikuyu community stood overwhelmingly with the President in 2022, and it was both unfair and ungrateful to now turn around and attack them using such dangerous language.
Waiguru, who personally supports President William Ruto’s re-election, said Duale’s remarks are unfortunate and must be condemned by all peace-loving Kenyans. She stated that the ethnic profiling remarks made by CS Aden Duale in response to the Ol Kalou by-election are deeply regrettable. She added that it is both overly simplistic and dangerous to reduce the government’s political challenges to tribal prejudice, especially when this very Kikuyu community stood with us so overwhelmingly in the past.
The Governor directly called out Duale, saying that given his stature and long experience in politics, such utterances are wholly unacceptable. She stated that an apology is not only necessary, but it is also owed to the people of Kenya.
Waiguru also urged all leaders to embrace responsibility and sobriety in their words and actions as the country moves toward the General Election. She reminded Kenyans that Kenya belongs to all of them, Kikuyus included, and that national unity must never be undermined by careless rhetoric.
Waiguru’s statement has been seen as a bold move given her close ties to the President. By speaking out against a senior Cabinet member, she has signaled that even those within the government’s inner circle are uncomfortable with the direction of political discourse.
Political analysts believe the statement could put pressure on President Ruto to rein in his ministers and address the growing ethnic tensions within his own administration.
