A Nairobi court has sentenced Phylis Njeri Kanyiri to one year in prison after finding her guilty of fraudulently obtaining laptops and a printer worth Sh1.8 million.
Njeri was charged with defrauding businessman Robinson Shitabmasi by falsely claiming she would pay for 21 HP laptops and one Dot Matrix printer, prompting the complainant to release the goods to her.
Milimani Chief Magistrate Alego ruled that the prosecution had successfully proved its case.
During mitigation, Njeri’s lawyer requested a non-custodial sentence, arguing that she is a single mother of four whose imprisonment would deeply impact her young family. He pleaded with the court to consider her parental responsibilities.
While acknowledging the mitigation, the magistrate maintained that the offence was serious and warranted punishment.
Njeri was fined Sh100,000, and in default, she will serve 12 months in prison.
