PayPal works in Kenya, but “works” and “cheapest” are two very different things. Between PayPal’s receiving fees, its currency conversion margin, and the M-Pesa withdrawal cost, many Kenyan freelancers and online workers are giving up a meaningful chunk of their income compared to alternatives built more specifically for this use case. Here’s an honest comparison — what each platform actually does well, and who it’s genuinely the right fit for.

The Quick Answer

There’s no single “best” PayPal replacement — the right choice depends entirely on what you’re using it for. As a starting point: freelancers with direct clients generally do best with Wise; freelancers earning through Upwork, Fiverr, or similar platforms often do better with Payoneer, since many of these platforms offer a native, sometimes cheaper Payoneer payout option; diaspora family remittances are usually cheapest through Sendwave, Remitly, or M-Pesa Global; and online gambling or forex-related transactions often need Skrill, since PayPal restricts these categories more strictly.

Wise — Best for Direct Freelance Clients

Wise (formerly TransferWise) is built specifically around transparent, low-cost currency conversion — its core promise is using the real mid-market exchange rate with a clear, disclosed fee, rather than PayPal’s built-in 3-4% margin. For Kenyans, Wise provides local account details in USD, GBP, and EUR, meaning a client abroad can pay you as if you had a local bank account in their country, and you withdraw to Kenya in shillings.

Best for: freelancers billing clients directly (not through a platform), remote workers paid by an overseas employer, and anyone regularly converting USD/GBP/EUR to KES who wants to see the actual fee rather than a hidden margin.

Where it falls short: less useful if your clients specifically expect to pay through PayPal and won’t switch, and it’s not designed for accepting card payments from online shoppers the way PayPal is.

Payoneer — Best for Freelance Platform Earnings

Payoneer has built deep integrations with major freelancing and marketplace platforms, and for many of these, its payout option can be cheaper than the same platform’s PayPal option. It’s structured more like cross-border business banking than a consumer wallet, which suits people earning consistent income through platform work.

Best for: freelancers earning through Upwork, Fiverr, Toptal, or similar platforms with native Payoneer support.

Where it falls short: less useful for receiving direct invoice payments from individual clients who don’t already use Payoneer, and it’s not as universally recognized by small businesses and individuals as PayPal is.

Skrill — Best for Gambling, Forex, and Restricted Categories

Skrill is a digital wallet with a similar feel to PayPal, but it fills a specific niche PayPal deliberately avoids: online gambling, betting, and certain forex broker transactions, where PayPal applies stricter restrictions. Skrill also supports holding balances across 40+ currencies.

Best for: online betting/casino deposits and withdrawals, and forex trading platforms that accept Skrill specifically.

Where it falls short: its fees run higher than specialist platforms like Wise for straightforward currency conversion, and it’s not a strong choice as your primary freelance-income tool.

Grey — Built Specifically for African Freelancers

Grey is a newer platform, but one built explicitly to solve the problem Kenyan, Nigerian, and Ghanaian freelancers face: getting a working USD, GBP, or EUR account despite limited local banking infrastructure. It’s gained real traction across African markets specifically because it addresses this gap directly, rather than being a global product adapted after the fact.

Best for: freelancers who want a USD/GBP/EUR account experience tailored to African users, particularly those who’ve found Wise’s local account details unavailable for their specific situation.

Where it falls short: as a smaller, newer platform, it carries less institutional track record than Wise or PayPal — worth keeping a backup option rather than relying on it exclusively while it’s still establishing itself.

For Family Remittances: Sendwave, Remitly, and M-Pesa Global

If you’re receiving money from diaspora family rather than running freelance income, dedicated remittance apps are usually both cheaper and simpler than PayPal:

  • Sendwave and Remitly are built specifically for remittance corridors into Kenya, often with no fee at all for the sender when funds land directly in M-Pesa.
  • M-Pesa Global is Safaricom’s own international remittance extension, letting Kenyans receive international transfers directly into M-Pesa without an intermediary wallet like PayPal at all.

Best for: receiving money from family or friends abroad, where speed and low sender-side cost matter more than invoicing or business features.

Quick Comparison by Use Case

  • Freelancing for direct international clients: Wise
  • Upwork, Fiverr, or similar platform earnings: Payoneer
  • Family remittances from the diaspora: Sendwave, Remitly, or M-Pesa Global
  • Online gambling, betting, or forex platforms: Skrill
  • Africa-specific USD/GBP/EUR account needs: Grey
  • Client insists on PayPal specifically: keep PayPal, but consider moving funds to Wise quickly after receiving to avoid PayPal’s ongoing conversion margin on funds sitting in your balance

A Practical Setup Many Freelancers Use

Rather than picking one platform and abandoning PayPal entirely, a common and sensible approach is running two in parallel: keep a PayPal account open for clients who specifically expect it (since dropping PayPal support can genuinely cost you client work), but route as much new business as possible through a cheaper alternative like Wise or Payoneer. This also protects you if PayPal ever restricts or holds your account, since that’s a real, if uncommon, risk of relying on a single payment platform for all your income — a point we cover in more detail in our PayPal fees breakdown.

Bottom Line

PayPal remains the most universally recognized option and the right choice when a client or platform specifically requires it — but for most Kenyan freelancers and online workers, at least one alternative from this list will save real money once you know which one matches your actual use case. The biggest mistake isn’t using PayPal; it’s using only PayPal, for everything, by default.
