A vocal United Democratic Alliance aspirant from Rift Valley has said members of the Kikuyu community will be evicted from the Rift Valley region if they don’t support President William Ruto’s re-election in 2027.
The Kikuyu community, which is dominant in the Mt Kenya region and Nairobi, has also occupied large parts of the Rift Valley, especially Nakuru, Laikipia, Uasin Gishu and Trans Nzoia counties. With the 2027 presidential election approaching thick and fast, Rift Valley leaders who are associated with President William Ruto have started beating drums of war and threatening the Kikuyu community, which is the biggest voting bloc in the country.
Having realised that the Kikuyus are opposing Ruto’s re-election due to mismanagement of the economy, patronage and embezzlement of public funds, Ruto’s attack dogs have started issuing threats to the community. In a video clip, the woman warned that all Kikuyus living in Rift Valley, including the wife of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, will be chased out of the region if they refuse to support Ruto’s re-election in 2027.
The sentiments have attracted uproar from peace-loving Kenyans, who are wondering why the National Cohesion and Integration Commission hasn’t issued an arrest warrant for this woman over ethnic profiling and tribal epithets targeting a particular community.
The threats echo a dark history in Kenya, where similar rhetoric during the 2007 post-election violence led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people and the deaths of over 1,100 Kenyans. The Rift Valley, which is President Ruto’s political heartland, was the epicentre of that violence, with Kikuyus being the primary targets of eviction and attacks
