The United States government has called for an investigation into the recent killings of civilians in Tanzania, allegedly carried out by police forces acting under orders from President Samia Suluhu.

Reports indicate that over 3,000 innocent civilians lost their lives during post-election unrest in Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, and Arusha following the contested October 29 election, which President Suluhu reportedly won with 98 percent of the vote.

Initially, the Tanzanian government claimed no casualties occurred during the protests. However, an explosive CNN report revealed that thousands of Tanzanians were buried in mass graves, allegedly as part of a cover-up to conceal security forces’ actions intended to maintain Suluhu’s hold on power.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee urged international bodies, including the International Criminal Court (ICC), to investigate the events in Tanzania.

“This report underscores the disturbing actions by the Tanzanian government to suppress protestors. Evidence of mass graves points to an unacceptable attempt to cover up gross human rights violations. An independent investigation into these tragic events is urgently needed,” the committee stated in its report to the White House.

Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged decisive action if the ICC fails to hold those responsible accountable. According to White House sources, Trump may consider military options in Tanzania should the international court fail to arrest and indict the perpetrators of the alleged atrocities.
