Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has left many of his supporters scratching their heads after openly declaring that the United Democratic Alliance will win the upcoming by-election in Ol Kalou, Nyandarua County.
Speaking on Saturday, Gachagua stated plainly that UDA — the party closely associated with President William Ruto — would carry the day in what is shaping up to be a high-stakes contest.
What made his remarks even more eyebrow-raising is the fact that Gachagua himself leads the Democracy for Citizens party, yet he showed no hesitation in throwing his confidence behind a rival outfit.
“Nominations are ongoing in Ol Kalou. People have turned up in their numbers, and the exercise has been conducted so well that the IEBC should come and learn from us. The Ol Kalou people will elect their next MP today in the nomination. And whoever wins in UDA will be the next MP,” Gachagua said.
His words have caught both opposition supporters and leaders off guard, with many now questioning whether he is quietly working hand in glove with President Ruto to chip away at opposition unity from the inside.
The timing of his remarks has only added fuel to the fire, coming shortly after Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru suggested that certain opposition figures put on a show of defiance during the day, only to be on the phone with State House at night, negotiating positions and chasing lucrative deals behind closed doors.
