Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has praised Members of the National Assembly who voted against the Finance Bill 2026, describing them as heroes who stood with ordinary Kenyans against what he termed an oppressive piece of legislation.
In a statement shared on social media following Thursday’s vote, Gachagua singled out the 40 MPs who voted “No” to the Bill, saying history would remember them for choosing the interests of the people.
According to Gachagua, the lawmakers demonstrated true leadership by rejecting a Bill he believes would place an additional burden on millions of Kenyans already grappling with a high cost of living.
“You are the true heroes of our Nation who chose the 55 million Kenyans against the oppressive 2026/27 Finance Bill,” he stated.
The former Deputy President further argued that the MPs who opposed the Bill had faithfully represented the wishes of their constituents and expressed confidence that voters would reward them in the next General Election.
“I trust your constituents will show you kindness next year on the 10th of August,” he said, in reference to the 2027 polls.
At the same time, Gachagua took aim at lawmakers who supported the Bill as well as those who were absent during the vote.
He accused them of failing to stand with the people at a critical moment and suggested that their actions were aimed at pleasing President William Ruto’s administration.
“For those who voted YES to oppress the people who elected them, as well as those who deliberately kept off when it mattered most, I am sure Mr. William Ruto is very happy with you and shall reward you handsomely,” he remarked.
Gachagua also urged Kenyans to take note of how their representatives voted, arguing that the Finance Bill vote was a defining moment that would shape future political accountability.
“Please note the Honourable Members who stood with you and voted NO, to reject the oppressive 2026 Finance Bill. That was a vote for you as a Kenyan,” he said.
