A stolen mobile phone has led police to a shop in Nairobi’s Central Business District, exposing a suspected network involved in the illegal trade of stolen handsets.
The breakthrough followed an intelligence-led operation conducted by officers from Embakasi and Central Police Station along Munyu Road.
According to police, officers mounted an undercover operation after receiving information linking a stolen phone to a suspected dealer operating in the area.
During the operation, officers arrested one suspect believed to be involved in the illicit trade.
Upon questioning, the suspect reportedly admitted that he had purchased the phone from people known to him and had already sold it to another person.
His confession provided detectives with crucial leads that could help them unravel the wider network supplying stolen mobile devices to dealers in the city.
Police subsequently searched the shop, where they recovered 12 other mobile phones and six phone batteries.
The discovery raised concerns that the premises could have been used as part of an established business dealing in stolen handsets and their accessories.
Police have since intensified efforts to trace other individuals mentioned by the suspect and establish how the stolen devices were sourced, sold and distributed.
The operation remains ongoing as officers pursue additional suspects believed to be connected to the network.
