Former Trade and Investment Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has for once admitted that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is now the undisputed Mt Kenya kingpin after his party won the Ol Kalou by-election last week.
Gachagua’s party, the Democracy for Citizens Party(DCP), whitewashed the United Democratic Alliance(UDA), Kenya’s ruling party, in what has been described as a political earthquake in the region.
During the high-stakes by-election, the DCP candidate, Sammy Kamau Ngotho, annihilated the UDA candidate, Samuel Muchina, who had the full support of the state machinery and State House.
Kamau Ngotho garnered an impressive 35,440 votes to defeat Samuel Muchina Nyaga, who received a paltry 5,450 votes. The margin of victory was so wide that it left political analysts questioning the influence of the ruling party in the Mt Kenya region.
Political pundits have since opined that the DCP win stamped the authority of Gachagua as the undisputed Mt Kenya region kingpin ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The victory has sent shockwaves through the ruling party, with many wondering how Gachagua managed to pull off such a resounding win despite the government deploying its full machinery to support the UDA candidate.
Moses Kuria, who was supporting the government candidate and UDA’s Samuel Muchina, spoke on Thursday about the by-election that left Ruto and his coterie scratching their heads due to the daylight humiliation.
In a statement on X, Kuria admitted defeat but appeared to offer some unsolicited advice to Gachagua. He said he had warned Gachagua in 2022 against joining Ruto without their own party. His statement had all the hallmarks of sour grapes, coming across as a man who could not quite stomach the overwhelming defeat.
