The announcement by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna that he is willing to join the united opposition led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sent shockwaves through state operatives, who are now scrambling to appease their bosses at State House.
Sifuna, who also leads Linda Mwanachi—a rebellious wing of the Orange Democratic Movement—made it clear that if teaming up with Gachagua is what it takes to remove Ruto, they will rally behind a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 election.
Speaking to Inooro TV on Tuesday, Sifuna stated that the team’s central agenda is to block President Ruto’s re-election bid, insisting that he does not deserve to remain in office beyond 2027.
The ODM politician acknowledged that removing Ruto from the presidency is no small task—one that demands unity among leaders who speak with one voice.
He stressed that like-minded politicians must come together, agree on a shared vision, and front one candidate to go head-to-head with Ruto.
“We are supposed to give Kenyans hope that we, as like-minded political leaders, will do everything possible to remove Ruto from office. Even if it means forming one large coalition with only two names on the ballot—Ruto’s and one from the opposition. However, this will require thorough discussions to understand each other’s vision for the country and what each one wants to do. We want to know if our brothers also believe in a moral system of governance, even if it means tackling one thing like corruption,” he said.
Sifuna’s remarks appear to have caught state operatives completely off guard. Shortly after his interview, X — formerly Twitter — was flooded with what many observers believe were state-sponsored hashtags intended to discredit the Sifuna-Gachagua alliance.
Posing as Sifuna’s supporters, state operatives allegedly used social media influencers and brown-envelope journalists to attack and undermine the alliance, while simultaneously drumming up support for President Ruto’s 2027 re-election campaign.
