Nairobi County Senator and embattled Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna called for a united front, even if it means teaming up with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, to limit the 2027 ballot to just two names: Ruto’s and one challenger.
Speaking during a radio interview, Sifuna was categorical: “If it means joining the Gachagua team, we will. We cannot have multiple names on the ballot paper.”
His push drew praise from journalist Hanifa Adan, who backed Sifuna’s sentiments, saying, “Sifuna is right. Unless we have a united opposition, Ruto is not getting out of power.” Hanifa further compared the proposed alliance to the successful 2002 coalition that ended Daniel arap Moi’s rule.
However, not everyone agreed. Influencer Book Ten flatly rejected the idea, saying: “Hio team ya Gachagua na Matiangi haiwezi. The united opposition are only vying to revenge; they don’t have your interests.” Book Ten’s sentiments reflect a growing concern among Kenyans that the push for a united opposition is driven by personal and political scores to settle rather than the genuine welfare of ordinary citizens.
The debate reflects Kenya’s tense politics after the 2024 protests and economic struggles, where polls show Ruto leading but a fragmented opposition could hand him victory, as was the case in 2022.
