Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has raised several pointed questions surrounding the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who passed away in October last year—questions that, to date, remain unanswered.
Raila Odinga, who was 80 years old at the time of his death, suffered a fatal heart attack at Devamatha Hospital in India, where he had been receiving medical treatment. The Orange Democratic Movement party leader was accorded a state burial, presided over by President William Ruto.
Now, barely a year after his passing, Gachagua has reignited the debate around the circumstances of Raila’s death. Speaking in Mombasa over the weekend during a series of opposition rallies, Gachagua expressed disbelief that a man who had appeared as fit and energetic as ever could die so suddenly and under such mysterious circumstances.
At the heart of his concerns, Gachagua called on Raila Odinga’s longtime aide, Dennis Onyango, to come clean on how he had apparently predicted his boss’s death while Raila was still admitted to Nairobi Hospital—a full three weeks before he eventually died. The Democracy for Citizens Party leader also questioned why no postmortem was conducted on Raila Odinga to establish the true cause of the heart attack and who made the critical decision to transfer him from Nairobi to India, where he ultimately took his last breath.
His remarks come against a backdrop of growing suspicion within ODM ranks. The party’s deputy leader, Godfrey Osotsi, has gone a step further, suggesting that Raila Odinga may have been deliberately eliminated by individuals within the party who were keen on handing ODM over to President William Ruto.
These allegations have gained traction at a particularly sensitive time, with Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga and Suna East Member of Parliament (MP) Junet Mohamed both facing accusations of working to auction the ODM party to the Ruto administration.
