Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru is on record saying that she cannot join the united opposition because some leaders, like former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, are busy working on a plan to return to the government.
Waiguru, who was speaking at a function in Kirinyaga earlier this month, claimed that Gachagua and his allies are currently holding talks with state operatives, quietly working out a way to return to government.
Gachagua was impeached in October 2024 and has since been out in the political cold for nearly two years. But having tasted real power during his time in office, he is apparently not ready to let go just yet.
According to Waiguru, Gachagua has been sending emissaries to Ruto, trying to broker a deal ahead of the 2027 presidential election. With the Mt. Kenya voting bloc firmly behind him, the former DP is said to have made a bold demand—asking Ruto to virtually kneel before him if he wants the region’s support come 2027.
Ruto, however, was having none of it. Speaking in Tharaka-Nithi County on Sunday, the President fired back, saying he would not beg or bow to anyone in search of votes. He also took a sharp dig at Gachagua, accusing him of behaving like a slave owner by claiming he controls the people of Mt. Kenya and can dictate who they vote for in the next election.
