Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo has made explosive claims about the events leading up to the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, alleging that he was offered Ksh 10 million and threatened with dire consequences if he failed to vote in favor of the motion.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Maanzo claimed there was a coordinated effort to influence senators ahead of the historic impeachment vote.
When asked whether senators were paid to support Gachagua’s impeachment, Maanzo responded in the affirmative.
“Yes, they were. You even heard Junet Mohammed confirm this,” the senator alleged.
Maanzo further claimed that he was personally approached and promised Ksh 10 million to back the impeachment motion but turned down the offer after being issued with what he described as death threats.
“I was approached and offered Ksh 10 million, but I was given conditions: ‘If you take this money, you must vote yes. If you take it and run away, you won’t get to your house. If you take it and vote no, you still won’t get to your house,'” Maanzo claimed.
According to the senator, the threats convinced him to reject the bribe and remain true to his position.
“Therefore, I said I was going to vote no,” he said.
