The National Cohesion and Integration Commission(NCIC) has surprised Kenyans after it said it cannot investigate Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale for calling members of the Kikuyu community hyenas.
Last week, Duale, who is a close confidant of President William Ruto, was captured in a video calling Kikuyus hyenas after they refused to vote for United Democratic Alliance(UDA) candidate Sammy Muchina during a by-election held in Olkalou a fortnight ago. Duale said Kikuyus are hyenas and they should be hunted down by all Kenyans who love peace.
His remarks brought public outrage, and he was last week summoned by NCIC over comments many said amounted to ethnic profiling. But in a surprise twist on Tuesday, NCIC chairman Kepha Omae said they cannot investigate Duale since they do not know whether the video clip was AI generated or not. “We can’t act on TikTok clips. We don’t know whether the clip that was sent is AI generated,” Omae explained.
However, in what appears to be an oxymoronic move, the commission chair stated that they will investigate former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku over videos suspected to contain hate speech.
So NCIC cannot verify a clear video of Duale but can confidently investigate Gachagua and Ruku. Make it make sense.
