Law enforcement officers in Rongo Sub-County are guarding a suspected drug trafficker at Migori County Referral Hospital after he was involved in a serious accident while transporting bhang valued at approximately Sh34.1 million.
The incident occurred on April 24, 2026, when the suspect, identified as 52-year-old Samson Ayiera Chacha, was driving a trailer, registration number KBS 548H.
He reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and plunged into River Kuja.
Chacha sustained serious injuries and was rescued by Good Samaritans, who rushed him to hospital for emergency treatment.
On Saturday, authorities conducted a recovery operation and successfully retrieved the submerged trailer from the river.
The vehicle was later towed to Kamagambo Police Station, where a search uncovered a large consignment of bhang.
Anti-narcotics officers from Isebania have since taken over the investigation.
Preliminary findings indicate the trailer was carrying 1,137.8 kilogrammes of bhang with an estimated street value of Sh34,134,000.
The suspect remains under police guard as he receives treatment and is expected to be charged upon discharge.
