A major drug trafficking attempt was thwarted in Nakuru after detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) intercepted a vehicle transporting a large consignment of cannabis with an estimated street value of Ksh 4.62 million.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), officers acted on credible intelligence indicating that a Mazda Demio registration number KDX 264K was being used to ferry the illicit cargo along the busy Eldoret-Nakuru Highway.
Detectives swiftly mounted an ambush along the route and soon spotted the suspect vehicle.
However, when officers signaled the driver to stop, he ignored the orders and sped off, triggering a dramatic high-speed chase towards the Subukia area.
In a coordinated operation, detectives managed to immobilize the vehicle by deflating one of its front tyres, forcing it to come to a stop and bringing the pursuit to an end.
The two occupants of the vehicle, identified as David Wafula and Loise Akoth, were arrested on the spot.
A subsequent search of the Mazda Demio led to the recovery of seven sacks containing cannabis sativa weighing approximately 154 kilograms.
The narcotics are believed to have a street value of about Ksh 4.62 million.
The suspects are currently in police custody undergoing processing ahead of their arraignment in court.
The recovered drugs have been detained as exhibits as investigations continue.
The DCI reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking and dismantling criminal networks involved in the distribution of narcotics across the country.
