A section of Artcaffé employees has raised concerns over what they describe as increasingly harsh working conditions, long hours, and poor staff welfare at one of the restaurant’s branches.
In an anonymous complaint shared with blogger Cyprian Nyakundi, a staff member claims that employees have been significantly affected by recent operational decisions, including alleged deductions of public holidays, off days, and leave days following last week’s matatu strike.
The worker argues that the strike, which disrupted transport across the country, was beyond employees’ control and should not have resulted in punitive measures.
The staff member also raised concerns about late-night transport arrangements, claiming that the company van drops employees along the highway around 2 a.m., leaving them to find their own way home at unsafe hours.
Another major concern highlighted is what employees refer to as “fungua fungua” shifts, where staff finishing late-night duties are expected to return to work just a few hours later, sometimes with barely any rest.
According to the complaint, this has left workers physically exhausted and mentally drained, increasing the risk of errors and accidents in a fast-paced working environment.
The employee further claims that staff meals are inadequate, alleging that sometimes workers are not provided breakfast or lunch despite long and demanding shifts.
Workers are now calling on management and the human resources department to urgently address the concerns, warning that the current conditions are affecting staff wellbeing and morale.
