Comedian and activist Eric Omondi has found himself at the center of online controversy following claims surrounding a boda boda rider who received a motorbike through a public fundraiser.
The trending story emerged after social media users revisited concerns about some fundraising initiatives, with critics alleging that certain fundraisers end up benefiting organizers more than the intended victims.
According to reports circulating online, the boda boda rider’s motorcycle had earlier been stolen, allegedly used in criminal activities, and later burnt by a mob during an incident of mob justice.
Following the incident, Eric Omondi is said to have organized a fundraiser to help the rider acquire a new bike.
Reports claim that approximately Ksh 200,000 was raised from well-wishers.
However, the rider now alleges that he was never informed that the motorbike handed to him had been acquired through a loan arrangement.
According to the claims, he later discovered that a hire purchase agreement had been signed with Watu Credit, with only a deposit allegedly paid for the bike.
The rider further claims he was later required to sign a new agreement and began making monthly instalments, eventually paying over Ksh 300,000 despite the bike reportedly being worth about Ksh 170,000.
He also alleges the motorcycle was repossessed after he fell behind on payments, prompting Nairobi Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria to intervene and help secure its release, although arrears are still said to be pending.
The claims have triggered heated debate online, with Kenyans calling for transparency and accountability in public fundraising initiatives.
Eric Omondi has yet to publicly respond to the allegations.
