Authorities at the Namanga One Stop Border Post have intercepted a 13-foot python that was being smuggled across the Kenya–Tanzania border, concealed inside a box disguised as spare parts.
The reptile was discovered by alert officers during a routine inspection of a passenger bus traveling from Dar es Salaam to Nairobi. Police said the vehicle was flagged for standard checks after officers noticed inconsistencies in some of the cargo being carried in the luggage compartment, prompting a more detailed search.
Upon opening one of the suspicious boxes, officials were shocked to find a live python carefully hidden inside, packed in a manner intended to avoid detection during transit.
The snake, measuring approximately 13 feet, was safely secured by wildlife officers who were called in immediately after the discovery.
The bus crew has since been taken into custody to assist with ongoing investigations aimed at establishing the origin of the python, its intended destination, and whether more individuals could be involved in the smuggling attempt.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over increasing cases of wildlife trafficking along the busy Namanga border route, which serves as a major transit corridor between Kenya and Tanzania.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to tightening surveillance and cracking down on illegal wildlife trade networks operating in the region.
