A man who was in the company of former Matungu MP David Were’s slain son, Hannington Were, has narrated the terrifying moments before the fatal attack that left the family and residents in shock.
Thirty-nine-year-old Hannington Were was reportedly murdered in the early hours of Sunday, May 24, after leaving his house with a friend before they were ambushed by armed attackers.
Speaking to Citizen TV, the survivor revealed that the two were walking when they spotted a motorcycle and attempted to stop it, hoping the rider would ferry them to their destination.
“However, the boda boda did not stop immediately; it rode for a few metres before stopping. Two people were on it. They then turned towards us, and we saw they had a metallic object which they used to hit him. When I saw this, I ran away screaming as I sought help,” the survivor recounted.
He said he later found another boda boda rider and rushed back to the scene, only to find Hannington lying motionless by the roadside.
“By the time we returned, we found him lying on the side of the road. It appeared they had struggled before he was left there,” he added.
Former MP David Were has since expressed deep shock and pain over his son’s killing, saying the family is struggling to understand why he was targeted, especially since he reportedly had no known disputes within the community.
Police have since launched investigations into the murder as residents and family members call for swift justice and the arrest of those behind the brutal attack.
