Detectives based in Mombasa have finally arrested Abdallah Suleiman, alias Asuu, a suspected drink-spiker who has been on the police radar for months.
His capture marks a major breakthrough in a wave of stupefying and stealing cases that had left many long-distance travelers counting losses.
According to police reports, Asuu specialized in targeting unsuspecting passengers travelling to Mombasa, Kisumu, Tanzania, and other destinations.
His modus operandi involved lacing snacks and soft drinks with sedatives before befriending passengers on buses and offering them the spiked items.
Once the victims were knocked out, he would rob them of cash, phones, and other valuables.
Detectives had been pursuing him after multiple cases were reported at Mombasa Central Police Station.
His luck, however, ran out at the Mariakani Weighbridge when sharp-eyed officers boarded a Nairobi-bound bus and recognized him.
A search revealed his bag of tricks: strips of Lorivan 2 tablets, assorted snacks, and soft drinks suspected to be laced with sedatives.
Police believe he was preparing for his next heist before the arrest.
Asuu is currently in custody as detectives finalize investigations ahead of his arraignment.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant when accepting food or drinks from strangers during travel.
