Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has issued a statement after he sparked outrage by referring to members of the Kikuyu community as hyenas.

Speaking at an event in Northern Kenya, Duale addressed the crowd in his native Somali dialect and stated that the Kikuyu community, which is opposing President William Ruto’s re-election, are hyenas and should not be allowed near power in Kenya.

“Kikuyus have said that nobody else will live well in Kenya except them. They have become the hyena who has been hunting but has become hard to stop. They have become hyenas. They have said Kenya is ours and nobody else will live in Kenya, even the likes of Moses Wetangula,” Duale said.

The remarks have been widely condemned across the political divide. Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru described them as deeply regrettable and said they amounted to ethnic profiling. Senators also took issue with the comments during a Senate sitting, with Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua warning that such rhetoric risked dragging the country back to the dark days of 2007 post-election violence. Garissa Senator Abdul Haji, despite being from the same region as Duale, described the remarks as wrong.

On Friday evening, Duale issued a statement saying he was misquoted. Here is what he wrote on X.
