President William Ruto narrowly escaped being struck by a flying bottle on Tuesday during a project launch in Langata Constituency, Nairobi.
Sources claim that due to dwindling support in the capital, Ruto—through state operatives and Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja—allegedly bused in crowds from Mathare and Soweto slums to cheer him on, in what many are calling a deliberate attempt to manufacture the optics of popularity in a city that sits at the heart of Kenyan politics.
The plan, however, appeared to backfire. As Ruto strolled through Langata, accompanied by the area’s Member of Parliament, Felix Oduya Odiwuor—widely known as Jalango—a bottle came flying in his direction, reportedly thrown by one of the very goons hired to cheer him. His security detail reacted swiftly, shielding the President and moving on as though nothing had happened.
The incident quickly set social media ablaze, with Kenyans weighing in from all corners. Many attributed it to deepening political fatigue and the rising wave of political tensions as rival camps begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general election.
This is not the first time Ruto has faced hostility from crowds. About a year ago, a similar incident unfolded in Migori County, where a shoe was hurled in his direction—a moment that also triggered widespread debate about the President’s eroding grassroots support.
